FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Gibbons Appoints New Deputy Director for the Nevada Office of Veterans Services
Reno – (1/25/06) Building on Nevada’s dedication to its veterans as outlined in his State of the State address, Governor Jim Gibbons has appointed Carole Turner as Deputy Director of the Nevada Office of Veterans Services (NOVS).  Ms. Turner will assume her position in NOVS’ Las Vegas Office on March 5th.  She replaces Steve Long, who retired as Deputy Director on December 15th.

Governor Gibbons said, “Carole’s 24-year career at VA and her dedication to veterans is exemplary.  I look forward to working with her and to continue her legacy of success on behalf of Nevada’s veterans.”  Before joining VA, Ms. Turner, a Vietnam-era veteran, served as a First Lieutenant in the United States Air Force Nurse Corps.

Effective January 31st, Ms. Turner retires as Director of VA’s Women Veterans Health Program (WVHP).  Under Ms. Turner’s leadership since 1999, WVHP became an industry leader in women’s cancer screening and enhanced an electronic tracking system designed to target women veterans’ health needs and services.  Her oversight of numerous outreach and education initiatives has made women veterans’ health care a visible and critical part of veterans’ health.  Ms. Turner was also a key player in drafting legislation that extends counseling benefits to former National Guard and Reservists.

Ms. Turner has received numerous awards, including the 2005 Sigma Theta Tau International, the Gamma Beta Chapter’s 100 Extra Ordinary Nurses of the Year, and the 2003 VA Unsung Heroine Award.  She has delivered presentations and published articles on veterans’ health issues, including military sexual trauma, osteoporosis screening, and women in the military.

Executive Director Tim Tetz said, “Carole’s leadership and experience in veterans’ care will not only benefit our Agency, but all of Nevada’s veterans as we look toward meeting the needs of yesterday’s heroes and today’s defenders of freedom.”
