Veteran of the Month – November 2015

RENO – (Nov. 1, 2015) Jana McElhaney of Reno has been selected as Veteran of the Month for November by the Nevada Department of Veterans Services (NDVS). McElhaney served in the U. S. Navy, and as a civilian dedicates her talents as both an employee and as a volunteer, supporting numerous military organizations and veterans service groups.

The Veteran of the Month ceremony will be held in Carson City at the Governor’s Mansion, 606 Mountain Street, 89709 on Tuesday, November 3, at 9:30 a.m.  The award was designated by Gov. Brian Sandoval, who on Veterans Day in 2011 established what has become a valued monthly observance. Friends, family, associates, veterans and supporters of veterans are encouraged to attend.

Kat Miller, Director of the NDVS, explained that candidates are chosen for their assistance to veterans, as well as their support of active duty personnel and service organizations. After leaving military service, volunteer work performed on behalf of their peers and for those who may be less fortunate speaks to their character, their dedication to the community and their willingness to unselfishly help others.

Some of the volunteer positions McElhaney has held include Board Secretary and Project Coordinator for Gold Star Families, committee member and board member for Reno Veterans Memorial Affairs-State War Memorial, member and supporter of Truckee Meadows Blue Star Mothers and Public Affairs Officer and Search and Rescue Aircrew member for the Civil Air Patrol.
