Claims Processing

The VSO can assist veterans filing claims related for:

Disability Compensation: is a tax free benefit awarded to veterans for a service-connected disability or disabilities that:

• Arose during service
• Was aggravated or worsened by service
• Is presumed to be related to service by VA
• Some applicants may qualify for an additional Aid and Attendance or Housebound benefit

Pension: is a tax free benefit awarded to wartime veterans:

• Must have served at least 90 days of active duty or 24 months after September 7, 1980. (At least one day during a wartime period.
• Income based
• Age 65 or older with limited or no income, OR
• Totally and permanently disabled, OR
• A patient in a nursing home receiving skilled nursing care, OR
• Receiving Social Security Disability Insurance, OR
• Receiving Supplemental Security Income.

Dependents and Survivors

VA offers benefits programs of servicemembers’ and veterans’ dependents and survivors. These programs include:

• Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC)- with this benefit you may also qualify for the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA) or the Survivors’ and Dependents” Educational Assistance Program (Chapter 35)
• Survivors’ Pension (income based) Veteran must have met the service requirements above.

The VSO will also provide support during appeal process, including representation at hearing; assist in locating DD Form 214; assist with discharge upgrades; provide information on State benefits.
