Important Information for Caregivers

News for Caregivers in Mental Health Booklet by AARP and Elizabeth Dole Foundation

The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) and the Elizabeth Dole Foundation have released a new Mental Health Booklet to help military and veteran caregivers who may be facing burnout, exhaustion, or hopelessness.

In this new booklet, these two organizations report an estimated 5.5 million caregivers across America are caring for servicemembers and veterans. The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio also informs readers that one-out-of-four military caregivers have experienced suicidal thoughts at one time or another. The coronavirus pandemic has meant more responsibility, increased isolation, anxiety, and fewer respite breaks for all caregivers, but those who care for U.S. veterans and servicemembers often face an extra layer of stress.

In this booklet, caregivers can find five tips to help practice self-care which includes acknowledging their feelings, taking care of their health, setting boundaries, paying attention to changes in themselves, and finally, understanding where they can turn for support. These tips are followed by resources and support services that can be found through either the AARP or the Elizabeth Dole Foundation. Resources range from respite relief program information to mental health guidance, and caregivers are encouraged to call the phone numbers listed in the guide if they have questions or are interested in accessing the resources mentioned.
