Happy 105th birthday to Dr. Anthony Bruno!

He celebrated this milestone at the Northern Nevada State Veterans Home on August 28, 2026.

Dr. Bruno is a U.S. Army veteran who served during World War II and the Korean War as a distinguished surgeon. During World War II, he volunteered to join the military before being drafted. “I beat them to the punch,” he joked but explained, “I was a junior in medical school at the time, and I was notified my draft deferment was coming to an end because the war remained challenging. It was explained if I was drafted, I would have no choice on where I was assigned; but if I volunteered, I would be able to have some say about my service.”

Initially Dr. Bruno tried to join the Navy but was rejected because of his height. “I was too short,” he said, “So, I went next door and joined the Army! They took me right away. They didn’t care,” he added. The Army sent him back to medical school to complete his education. He graduated with his medical degree in August 1945. He said, “Take a look at that date,” noting events were unfolding that month that would bring the war to an end.

Over the course of his military service, Dr. Bruno served as the Chief of Surgery at U.S. Army hospital facilities. He served both stateside as well as in Munich, Germany, and Korea. Prior to leaving the military, Dr. Bruno received a U.S. Army Commendation for Outstanding Service.

Dr. Bruno spent more than 50 years in private practice as a surgeon. He was devoted to his family saying of his belated wife, Jeanne, everyone needs that kind of person in their life! The couple had two children, Ann and Tom.

Despite his age, Dr. Bruno remains vibrant, engaged, and witty. He attributes his longevity to several factors adding, “The secret to a long life is not about the things you do, but the things you don’t do,” saying he avoids alcohol, maintains a healthy weight, and eats right. He is also an advocate of exercise, which he has done throughout his life. At the young age of 80, he won a Senior Olympic Championship in doubles tennis in Tuscan, Arizona!

We are so honored to be able to share this celebration with Dr. Bruno and his family!

VSO intake appointments are taking about 30–90 days to schedule. The wait time depends on which location you choose and appointment availability. If you have already submitted a request, you may need to wait longer than usual for someone to contact you. It does not necessarily mean your request has a problem, it’s primarily a notice about the current backlog.
