As the sun began to set on the final Sunday of September, luminaries glowed at the Gold Star Families Memorial in front of the Northern Nevada State Veterans Home in Sparks. Each light honored a fallen service member and the family who will forever carry their loved one’s memory forward.
The annual Gold Star Luminary event is held in recognition of Gold Star Mothers and Families Day and is observed nationally on the last Sunday of September. Gold Star families are the immediate family members of U.S. military service members who died in the line of duty.
At the end of the ceremony, luminaries were lit and placed around the memorial. The gathering provided an opportunity for the community to stand alongside Gold Star families and assure them their loved ones are remembered.
Through this simple act of remembrance, communities across Nevada and the nation sent a powerful message to Gold Star families that their service and sacrifice are remembered and honored and that they too are never alone, never forgotten.
