Message from the Director – April 2022

Dear Veterans, Families, Advocates, and Friends:

Let me start with this:  I am excited to announce the 2021 NDVS Annual Report is out!  I invite to you read the report to learn more about the programs and services that support Nevada’s veterans and their families.  The report is HERE.

As to this past month, it has been great to see so many of you at events held in support of our veterans’ community, to include the Annual Women Veterans Conference, the 2022 Nevada Veterans Legislative Symposia, and at Vietnam War Veterans Day recognition ceremonies.

It was especially energizing to share ideas with veterans and their supporters during the Symposia where attendees identified and prioritized dozens of issues that will be shared with Governor and state Legislature for consideration during the 82nd Legislative Session (February-June 2023).  Look to see the top issues that emerged from the symposia in our June newsletter.

Since 1943, Nevada’s Veterans legislative efforts have been tremendously successful; thanks to the hard work and commitment of Nevada’s veterans' organizations hundreds of veterans' bills have been passed.  Since 2014, these organizations have come together under the United Veterans Legislative Council (UVLC) to collectively advocate on the behalf of veterans and their families.  Learn more about the UVLC and the March 2022 Veterans Legislative Symposia in this edition of Veterans Voice, under Programs and Services.

As for other important March events, organizations across the state ensured that Vietnam War Veterans Day was remembered and those who served in the war were honored.  Thank you to VVA Chapters #989 (Reno), #388 (Carson City), and Hospice-Veterans Partnerships (Las Vegas) for inviting NDVS to participate in your events and for the opportunity to present proclamations from the Governor.

Finally, on a personal note, this is my final “Message from the Director” as I retire at the end of April.  Thank you to all those who allowed me to be a part of your efforts to serve Nevada’s heroes.  I have been honored to follow in the footsteps of 14 other directors, who with their teams, created programs that enriched the lives of Nevada Veterans.  Working with my team to support Nevada Veterans and their families has not been a “job” but an absolute privilege and I fervently hope that I can keep touch with the many wonderful people I have worked with over the past decade.

Respectfully,
Kat Miller
