Message from the Director – March 2022

To my fellow veterans, military members, families, and supporters:

I encourage you to set time aside to attend one or more of the great upcoming events planned this month.  I’ve outlined the highlights of some the major events in this message, but please read more about them in this newsletter and please help us share this information wide and far.

March is recognized across the U.S. as “Women’s History Month" and Governor Sisolak will proclaim March as “Women’s Military History Month in Nevada” during the NDVS-hosted Women Veterans Conference on 12 March 2022. This year we are offering both in-person and virtual options for participants.  The in-person event will be at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center with check-in at 8:00 a.m. and will run through 4:00 p.m. The virtual option will be available through Zoom from 9:00 a.m. through 1:30 p.m. No matter how you plan to attend, click HERE to learn more and register.

Also happening this month are the 2022 Nevada Veterans Legislative Symposia. At the Symposia, Nevada veterans are provided the opportunity to come together to develop legislative priorities and recommendations for the next legislative session. Over the years, this has been a very successful process. For example, in the 2021 session, fifteen important veterans’ bills were signed by the Governor and many of these bills started as ideas raised during the 2020 virtual Legislative Symposium.

The southern Nevada Symposium will take place in Las Vegas on March 19, 2022 at the Dula Community Center, located at 451 E. Bonanza Road from 8:00 a.m. through 11:30 a.m. Click HERE to register. The following weekend on March 26th  the northern Nevada session will take place in Reno at the Washoe County Senior Center, located at 1155 E. 9th Street in Reno from 8:00 a.m. through 11:30 a.m. Click HERE to register for the Reno event.

Finally, I have some news of my own to share; I plan to retire from state service on April 30, 2022. This was no an easy decision, but it is one that will allow me to devote more time to my family and friends.  It is a good time to “pull pitch” as (1) we at NDVS have a tremendous team in place, and (2) the pandemic  while still a significant concern, is far more manageable now than during anytime in the past two years. I am grateful to first, Governor Sandoval and then, Governor Sisolak for providing me with the opportunity to serve as the NDVS Director.

In closing, serving you and your families has been a tremendous privilege and an honor. I will be around to assist with the transition of the next NDVS Director, once the Governor makes his appointment in the weeks ahead. I will keep you appraised of new developments and I also look forward to seeing you at an NDVS-hosted event over the next couple of months.

Respectfully,
Kat
