Message from the Director - August 2026

October provides an important opportunity to recognize Agent Orange Awareness Month and to remind veterans that military services can bring unique health risks that may not become apparent until years or even decades later.

Exposure to Agent Orange and other toxic substances has affected generations of veterans. With the expansion of benefits and health care under the PACT Act, more veterans may now qualify for VA health care and benefits related to toxic exposures. I encourage veterans and their families to learn more about these resources. NDVS also offers an online health care assessment to help veterans better understand their individual needs and identify resources that may be available to them. Taking that first step could make an important difference in your health and quality of life. Take the NDVS toxic exposure assessment quiz by going HERE.

As we move into fall and the holiday season approaches, this is also an especially important time for Nevada’s veteran community. Over the past several weeks, we have come together to remember September 11, honor our nation’s POW and MIAs, and recognize our Gold Star Families through the Luminary Event at the Northern Nevada State Veterans Home.

Soon, we will turn our attention to Veterans Day. This year will be especially significant as we unveil the Nevada State Veterans Memorial at its new home at Thunderbird Family Sports Complex in Las Vegas following its move from the Grant Sawyer State Office Building. We look forward to sharing this important occasion with Nevada’s veterans, their families, and our community.

Before we know it, December will be here. Preparations are already underway for Wreaths Across America, when Nevadans will once again gather to remember and honor those who have served.

October also brings two fun events, Nevada Day and Halloween. I hope you have an opportunity to enjoy both!

Thank you for your continued support of Nevada’s veterans, service members, and their families. It is an honor to serve alongside you!

Warmest regards,

Col. Mary Devine (Ret.)

NDVS (Nevada Department of Veterans Services) is currently dealing with a large number of requests.

VSO intake appointments are taking about 30–90 days to schedule. The wait time depends on which location you choose and appointment availability. If you have already submitted a request, you may need to wait longer than usual for someone to contact you. It does not necessarily mean your request has a problem, it’s primarily a notice about the current backlog.
