Message from the Director

As we head into Nevada’s 82nd Legislative session, I’m reminded of the military training when veterans first enlisted in the military. We didn’t quite know what to expect, but in hindsight, that training proved to be the foundation we built our futures on. I know I will use the lessons learned while building that foundation to continue to serve the veterans, servicemembers and dependents of Nevada.

I look forward to working with all of you as we prepare for the 2023 legislative session.  The Nevada Veterans Legislative Summits held in Las Vegas and Reno in January were a tremendous success a great start on the work we will continue to do.  A special thanks goes out to Andy LePeilbet, Chair of the United Veterans Legislative Counsel for the work he put into assisting with the Summits.  I also want to thank the Governor’s office and the legislators who participated in the Summits, providing valuable information for the attendees on what they can expect during the upcoming session.

Speaking of a tremendous showing, the Groundbreaking Ceremony on 25 January marked the beginning of the expansion at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery. We could not have had a successful event without the support of the State Commanders and others who helped us get the word out about the ceremony. I would like to thank representatives from the National Cemetery Administration’s Veterans Cemetery Grants Program, the Governor’s Office, state and local officials for their support of this important project. This expansion will ensure the cemetery will continue to meet the needs of veterans, dependents and Gold Star parents for years to come.

I want to mention three upcoming events:

Our second in-person Nevada Veterans Transition Assistance Program or NVTAP event will be held on February 11, 2023 at the Fallon Convention Center. Click HERE if you are a transitioning servicemember, veteran or family member who would like to attend.

On March 10th, the Women Veterans and Military Conference will be held in Las Vegas at the Santa Fe Station Hotel and Casino. Register HERE to reserve your seat.

On March 15, 2023, Veterans and Military Day at the Legislature (VAMDAL) will be held in Carson City. This day-long event provides us with the opportunity to showcase our veterans, servicemembers and their families to lawmakers and the public. The Opening Session starts at 9:00 a.m. behind the Nevada Library and Archives building, but I hope you will join us for coffee and donuts at 8:00 a.m. prior to the ceremony at the same location. The lineup of events at VAMDAL this year promises to be bigger and better than ever, so I hope you will register HERE to learn the details and join us.

It is a privilege and honor to serve you and while at times our work may be demanding, it is extremely rewarding. I know you share my passion and with your continued support, together we will assist more veterans than ever before. I look forward to seeing you at one of the many veteran events throughout our state.  Please let us know if there is an event in your area that you want NDVS to attend.

Respectfully,
Fred Wagar
