Nevada Communities Called to Honor Medal of Honor Recipients

Each year on March 25, National Medal of Honor Day honors the extraordinary courage and sacrifice of our nation’s Medal of Honor recipients

Each year on March 25, National Medal of Honor Day honors the extraordinary courage and sacrifice of our nation’s Medal of Honor recipients, both those living today and those who have passed.

The National Association of State Directors of Veterans Affairs is encouraging communities across the country to help ensure that every Medal of Honor recipient’s gravesite is cared for and remembered on this day.

Here in Nevada, veteran service organizations, National Guard units, ROTC, JROTC programs, schools, Scouts, civic and patriotic organizations, historical societies, local governments, and other community groups are invited to take part.

Participation can be simple. For example, simply visit a Medal of Honor recipient’s gravesite, place a flag, wreath or flowers, read the recipient’s name and Medal of Honor citation, or help identify a gravesite that may need appropriate care or restoration.

The goal is simple. On March 25, every Medal of Honor recipient’s grave should bear visible evidence that America remembers.

NDVS (Nevada Department of Veterans Services) is currently dealing with a large number of requests.

VSO intake appointments are taking about 30–90 days to schedule. The wait time depends on which location you choose and appointment availability. If you have already submitted a request, you may need to wait longer than usual for someone to contact you. It does not necessarily mean your request has a problem, it’s primarily a notice about the current backlog.
