Nevada honors the brave service members who gave their lives in defense of our nation. Their sacrifice protects our freedoms, strengthens our communities, and reminds us of the cost of service. We remember each hero with gratitude and uphold their legacy by supporting the veterans, families, and loved ones they leave behind.
Honoring Our Heroes
Nevada’s Fallen Heroes
In November 2014, Nevada’s Book of Fallen Heroes was created. The book is located at the State Capitol Building in Carson City and each week a page is turned remembering those who gave their lives for our freedom. In the links below are the names of those currently listed in the Book of Fallen Heroes separated by each war.
Afghanistan War
The War in Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom) began in October 2001 in response to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States. America withdrew from Afghanistan in August 2021, bringing to a close America’s longest war in its history.

Iraq War
The groundwork to the War in Iraq (Operation Iraqi Freedom) began in October of 2002 with a Congressional resolution authorizing the U.S. President to go to war to disarm Iraq. In November of that same year, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 1441, giving Iraq a final chance to comply. Military action began in March 2003. By April 2003, coalition forces took Baghdad. The White House declared the regime gone. By December of 2003, Saddam Hussein was captured. He was eventually tried and put to death. In November of 2004, the US and the new Iraqi forces battle insurgents and declare Falluja liberated. The number of US forces continues to increase from 2004 through 2008 when US troops reductions began. In September 2010, Operation Iraqi Freedom is renamed Operation New Dawn to reflect the reduced US troop role. The Iraq War ended in December of 2011, marking an end of the almost nine-year war.

If you know of a fallen hero who is not listed and meets the following criteria, OR, if you have additional information OR, comment about an existing hero, please submit the information to the Nevada Department of Veterans Services by E-mail or letter. With your help, every Nevadan who lost his or her life in the defense of our Nation will be remembered with honor.

Criteria:
A Nevadan serving in the military (as identified in Paragraph 4 below) who becomes a casualty “in action,” as a direct result of hostile action, or is the victim of a terrorist activity (see below for definition of In-Action and Nevadan).
Definition of Nevadan: A service member may be considered a “Nevadan” for the purpose of inclusion in the Book of Fallen Heroes if they meet any of the criteria below:
- Were a current or former legal resident of Nevada
- Have “Nevada” listed as Home of Record on their Department of Defense Certificate of Release or Discharge
- Entered military service from Nevada as indicated on their Department of Defense Certificate of Release or Discharge
- Were a member of the Nevada National Guard or US Army Reserve stationed in Nevada at the time they became a casualty “in action,” as a direct result of action, or were the victim of a terrorist
Definition of In-Action:
- “In action” characterizes the casualty as having been the direct result of hostile action, sustained in combat or relating thereto, or sustained going to or returning from a combat mission provided that the occurrence was directly related to hostile action. For the purposes of this memorial, “In Action” includes service members who die as a result of a combat theater-related injury or disease within one year of returning from theater.
- Included are persons killed or wounded mistakenly or accidentally by friendly fire directed at a hostile force or what is thought to be a hostile force. However, not to be considered as sustained in action and not to be considered Fallen Nevadans for the purpose of this memorial are injuries or death due to self-inflicted wounds, combat fatigue, and except in unusual cases, wounds or death inflicted by a friendly force while the individual is in an AWOL, deserter, or dropped-from-rolls status or is voluntarily absent without authority from a place of duty.
- Terrorist activity refers to activities that involve violent or life-threatening acts that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or of any State (Title 18, USC). The State of Nevada uses Department of Defense and Department of Justice recognized terrorist activity to determine eligibility under this definition.
