Northern Nevada State Veterans Home Welcomes New Administrator

(Sparks, Nev.) – Nicole Owczarski has assumed the role of administrator at the Northern Nevada State Veterans Home (NNSVH). She brings nearly a decade of experience as a healthcare professional who possesses a passion for serving those who have served our country.

“I have family members who served in WWII, so the opportunity to serve veterans and their families is a dream come true,” said Nicole Owczarski, NNSVH’s new administrator. She added, “I started my career as a social worker because I strongly believe in service to others. It is such a privilege and honor to be able to serve Nevada’s heroes in this capacity.”

As head of the skilled nursing care facility, Owczarski is responsible for supervising, planning, developing, monitoring and maintaining the high standards of care throughout the home. Last October, the home received the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) highest rating possible, a 5-Star quality rating, awarded to only the top 10 percent of skilled nursing care facilities in each state.

In 2014, Owczarski became a licensed master social worker. In 2017, she added another credential, becoming a licensed administrator. She is now working to obtain her Ph.D., as a doctoral student at the University of Southern California’s Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work.

Over the past eight years working in healthcare in Las Vegas, Owczarski has helped the homeless, the addicted, and the mentally ill. As a social worker first, Owczarski believes in treating the whole person, not just a physical ailment.

“In addition to her strong administrative and business skills, Nicole has a passion for people,” said Amy Garland, NDVS Deputy Director of Healthcare Services. “She brings compassion, kindness and key core values to the table which are attributes that inspire others and cannot be taught.”

Owczarski succeeds former administrator, Michael Ball, who is credited with successfully opening the home, achieving full census, and guiding the northern Nevada facility through the pandemic.

VSO intake appointments are taking about 30–90 days to schedule. The wait time depends on which location you choose and appointment availability. If you have already submitted a request, you may need to wait longer than usual for someone to contact you. It does not necessarily mean your request has a problem, it’s primarily a notice about the current backlog.
