Special Day is set aside to honor Nevada’s Veterans and Military at the Legislature


(Carson City, Nevada) – The public is invited to attend Veterans and Military Day at the Legislature on Wednesday, March 20, 2019.

The day-long event starts with an opening ceremony at 9:00 a.m. featuring Governor Steve Sisolak. The ceremony will take place in front of the Veterans Memorial, located behind the Capitol Building.

Governor Sisolak said, “Veterans and Military Day at the Legislature is one of the many ways we honor the men and women who have served our state and nation.” He added, “It also allows veterans, military members, and their families to meet and talk with their elected representatives about issues important to them. I’m humbled and proud to be part of this wonderful tradition in our community, and I want to thank the Nevada National Guard, United Veterans Legislative Council, Department of Veterans Services and the Nevada Legislature for their work on this great event.”

The Veteran of the Month, Robert James Mort (Jim Mort), will be honored during the opening ceremony. The combat Army veteran is the recipient of two Purple Hearts and two Bronze Stars for his service in the Vietnam War. The Veteran Supporter of the Month, The Home Depot Foundation, will also be honored during the opening ceremony for its work to keep the ground beautiful at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley.

The day at will also feature special ceremonies in honor of veterans and military members in the Legislative Building. The United Veterans Legislative Council will be pairing veterans with state lawmakers in both the Assembly and Senate. This will allow veterans to sit on the floor of both chambers with their assigned lawmaker. The pairings will start in the Assembly around 11:00 a.m. and in the Senate around 11:30 a.m. (These times can vary)

The day will also include static military displays, a free BBQ lunch, and exhibits of interest to veterans, their families and the military community.
