September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month!

Kim Donohue,  Suicide Prevention Program Manager

As we move into September, the Nevada Department of Veterans Services Suicide Prevention Program continues to actively lead statewide efforts to connect communities with life-saving prevention education resources.  The Nevada’s Governor’s and Mayors’ Challenge Team’s efforts were recently recognized and our State was awarded an additional invitation by SAMHSA/VA to expand the team’s efforts into the rural regions of Nevada. As a result, we are excited to announce along with Governor Sisolak, Mayor Rich Stone – (City of Winnemucca) and Mayor Reece Keener – (Elko) have joined efforts to be a part of the SAMHSA/VA Governor’s Community Expansion Project.  This expansion will bring a total of four Mayor’s Challenge Teams and the Governor’s Challenge Team to Nevada!

In a press release on August 21, 2020, Governor Sisolak announced the exciting news of the Governor’s Community Expansion Project, expanding the Mayor’s Challenge Teams into rural Nevada.  For more information read the official press release from Governor Sisolak.

With September around the corner, we continue to urge everyone to take the ASIST class and PsychArmor’s S.A.V.E. Training so that together help we can help prevent suicide. We also invite everyone to support the Nevada Coalition for Suicide Prevention’s 14th Annual “Walk In Memory, Walk For Hope” on September 12 VIRTUALLY across Nevada. Our Department has also teamed up with VFW Post 3396 to host the Suicide Prevention Change Direction Hike, Mt. Rose Summit Tahoe Rim Trail from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M.
