Women Veterans: Breast Cancer Awareness

Women Veterans: Breast Cancer Awareness

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and if you are a woman, it’s a good reminder schedule a mammogram. Breast cancer is a serious concern for female veterans because it’s ranked as the second leading cause of death among women. New emerging research is looking at risk factors such as low levels of vitamin D, light exposure at night, and exposure to chemicals in cosmetics, sunscreen and plastic. Nevertheless, if breast cancer is detected early, there is a 99% survival rate. Mammograms are available for eligible veterans at many VA Medical Centers or community sites.
