Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Northern Nevada State Veterans Home


(Reno, Nevada) – Media members are invited to attend the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the new Northern Nevada State Veterans Home on Monday, December 17, 2018.

IMPORTANT: Portable Live units will be required! ABSOLUTELY NO CABLES OR WIRES WILL BE ALLOWED TO BE STRUNG INSIDE OR OUTSIDE THE BUILDING. (So NO strung audio cables either) Sound will be provided by Star Sound and an audio mult box will be available for your use on the media riser, with the riser located in the back of the room.

PROGRAM: For your planning purposes:
4:30 PM – Self Guided Tours
6:00 PM – Ribbon Cutting Ceremony (Program attached )
6:45-7:00 PM – Actual Ribbon Cutting (Outside by the front door)

The new home is located at 36 Battle Born Way in Sparks, Nevada. (North of the Lake’s Crossing Campus, near the Kietzke Lane and Galletti Way intersection, across from the DMV)

PARKING: Please use the front, main access off of Battle Born Way (formally Kietzke Lane). Media parking will be located in both the front and back of the building. Map attached shows those areas.

The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony marks a major milestone; the end of major construction. THIS IS NOT A GRAND OPENING!

The facility must receive its state and federal credentials before it “opens.” The new home is expected to begin accepting new residents in the spring of 2019.

The home will be owned by the State of Nevada. The Nevada Department of Veterans Services will oversee it. It will be managed by Avalon Health Care.
This facility will serve veterans, their spouse and Gold Star families

Funding/Timeline
• 2006- Nevada New Home Construction Grant Application submitted to the VA
• 2013- Governor Brian Sandoval recommended and the State Legislature passed AB 505 to begin design/planning
• 2015- Governor Sandoval included required State matching funds of $14.1 million in his SFY 2016-2017 budget. Nevada lawmakers approved his budget.
• 2017- Estimates show the construction cost for the new home rises $1-to-$2 million per year due to inflation
• 2017- At Governor’s urging, State lawmakers agree to “advance” funding of the federal portion of the project, $33.5-million
• 2017- Groundbreaking ceremony held on July 17, 2017
• 2018- The State of Nevada learns the new veterans home made the top tier on the VA’s New Facilities Construction Grants on April 13, 2018
• Federal portion to build the home is $33.5 million. State matching (35% requirement) is $14.1 million. Total price is more than $47-million
