Longtime Reno Geriatric Care Specialist, Steven L. Phillips, MD, Named Medical Director of Northern Nevada State Veterans Home


(Sparks, NV) – Longtime Reno Geriatric Specialist Steven L. Phillips, MD, has been named Medical Director for the new Northern Nevada State Veterans Home in Sparks, Nevada.

Phillips received his medical degree from Tecnologico de Monterrey Escuela de Medicina in 1983. He is an internal medicine specialist and geriatrician who brings more than 30 years of experience. He is the President and CEO of Reno-based Geriatric Specialty Care of Nevada (GSC). GSC is a unique practice with an emphasis on the elderly population providing visits in the patient’s place of residence whether that is in a skilled, assisted, long-term, or group home, as well as private residence. 

Recently, the Washoe County Medical Society gave a special salute to Dr. Phiilips and GSC after GSC received a national ranking in the top 2% of Home-Based Medical Care (HBMC) practices. Additionally, the Geriatric Specialty Care HBMC practice was among the top 10 of the 330 HBMC programs nationwide with more than 100 house call patients in 2014 for overall patient care and potential savings to the Medicare and Medicaid program (CMS)

Phillips also has a unique family link to the military. His middle name is Langan. He said, “It is a name my mother is fond of due to the family legend it honors.” John Langan was a highly decorated Captain on the Great Lakes out of Wolf Island in Canada. He received a US Presidential Medal for Bravery related to a ship rescue. Additionally, his mom is 92-years-old and still living independently!
