We congratulate Carlton R. Fogg Jr. for being named Veteran of the Month (VOM) and Richard S. Keirn being named Veteran Supporter for the Month (VSM)of May. Due to the risk of coronavirus exposure, special ceremonies to honor and recognize the VOM and VSM have been postponed until it is safe to resume them once again.
Fogg served in the Navy as an HM3 Hospital Corpsman for nine years and following his service, he has been incredibly involved in the veteran community.
Fogg has been a committed and supportive member of the veteran community in southern Nevada. He has served as the VFW Post 36 chaplain since 2014 and became the post commander in July 2019. He is safe TALK certified and has served his fellow veterans in providing counseling to those experiencing PTSD, suffering from depression, and contemplating suicide. He also volunteers at the Southern Nevada State Veterans Home in Boulder City and officiates weddings and funerals for veteran families. While once officiating a funeral, he used his medical training from the Navy save the father of the deceased from a severe heart attack and provided care until the arrival of paramedics.
Fogg’s commitment to the veteran community also extends to supporting those still in uniform. He currently serves as the Command Chaplain for the Naval Operational Support Center, Las Vegas. In this capacity he has supported the Center’s mission in conducting Casualty Assistance Calls and organizing the dignified transfer of the remains of service members who passed away while on active duty.
While not a veteran, Keirn has been a dedicated and committed supporter of the veterans of our State for many years. He has been an associate member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart 730 and of the Vietnam Veterans of America, where he has served as a past Chapter Americanism Officer and past Chapter Historian. He has also been involved with the Henderson DeMolay Chapter and helped organize the start of a Chapter Veterans Program
Keirn’s support is not limited to veteran organizations but also extends to efforts in the community like the Henderson Veterans Center and Veterans Transition Center. He is helpful with veteran organization fund-raising activities and dedicates 120 hours a year to supporting various projects in his local area.
The Veteran of the Month is awarded to veterans across Nevada who have gone above and beyond the call of duty, specifically with respect to volunteer work in support of veterans and the military. The Veteran Supporter of the Month award recognizes both organizations and non-veteran Nevada community members who support military members stationed in Nevada, Nevada veterans and their families. Both programs shine a bright light on individuals and organizations that assist military members, veterans, and their families with no expectation of recognition or award.
The May Veteran of the Month and Veteran Supporter of the Month ceremony has been postponed. The Nevada Department of Veterans Services will provide information on re scheduling once this unprecedented health crisis is over.
