Ken Santor Selected as March 2014 Veteran of the Month


The NDVS, on behalf of the veterans services commission, is pleased to announce that Ken Santor has been selected as the Veteran of the Month for March 2014.

Mr. Santor joined the United States Marine Corps. in 1948 and served in Korea under the command of Chesty Puller from 1950 – 51 and was discharged in 1952.

Mr. Santor was awarded the Purple Heart with one star, Commendation Ribbon with combat V, Good Conduct medal, Korean Service Medal with three stars among many other awards.

Mr. Santor founded the Marine Corps League, Battle Born Detachment in 1988 and has served in different capacities with that organization, including serving as Commander from 1988 – 1990. He was also very instrumental in the building of the Marine Corps League Memorial at the Veterans Cemetery in Fernley, NV.

Mr. Santor also founded the Military Order of the Purple Heart Reno chapter in Reno, NV in 1997, and served as Commander from 1999 – 2003. He was instrumental in the U.S. Postal Service issuing the Purple Heart Stamp as a “Forever Stamp".

In short, Ken Santor not only served his country with honor, he tirelessly works to improve the lives of veterans across Northern Nevada. On behalf of Nevadans everywhere, thank you for your service.

In 2011 the Veteran of the Month award was established for men and women across Nevada who have gone above and beyond the call of duty specifically with respect to volunteer work in support of veterans and the military. It is an opportunity for all of us to shine a bright light on the work veterans continue to do for our nation.
