Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) and the Holidays

The VA offers the Intimate Partner Violence Assistance Program (IPVAP), to help veterans, partners, and VA staff. Studies of women veterans receiving VA healthcare have shown that they are at higher risk for intimate partner violence (IPV). In addition, people who are experiencing IPV are more likely to suffer depression and anxiety, compromising one’s immune system and leaving them vulnerable to viruses.

During a crisis or natural disaster, which interrupts normal daily life routines, there is an increased risk of IPV, especially under the stress of COVID-19 restrictions. Relationship conflict and/or abuse can escalate during times of extreme stress and when access to services is limited. Moreover, during the holidays people can experience unexpected financial pressures and emotional stress, which may lead to drinking alcohol as a coping strategy. An increase in the consumption of alcohol can also contribute to more incidents of IPV.
