Message from the Director – May 2019

Memorial Day will be here before you know it! Thank you for sharing your activities and events with us. With your help, we have been able to put together a very full calendar for this month. Click here to review the calendar: https://veterans.nv.gov/events/

Memorial Day is Monday, May 27th with ceremonies taking place in both northern and southern Nevada. In northern Nevada, the ceremony will start at 11:00 AM at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley. This year, Governor Steve Sisolak and I will be in attendance in Fernley. At the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City, the ceremony will start at 1:00 PM.

Don’t forget the “Flag-In" events at both cemeteries! This ensures an American flag is placed on each gravesite for Memorial Day. This year, the “Flag-In" events will be held on Saturday, May 25th.  For more detail, including the times and locations to meet inside the cemeteries, click here: https://veterans.nv.gov/mark-your-calendar-may-2019/

I also want to thank those who turned out for our free, two-day Nevada Veterans Advocate (NVA) workshop in Reno! We provided training to nearly 100 volunteers. There is so much interest in the NVA program, we’re already planning the next free event to be held this fall in southern Nevada. We will share times, dates, and location as soon as this information is firmed up and becomes available.

As an NVA, you are a specially trained volunteer who can be of tremendous help to veterans or military members. The training allows you to assist in connecting these individuals to earned benefits, resources or programs. If you cannot attend the next free training, you are always welcome to become an NVA by taking our online course! Go here to learn more:  http://www.veterans.nv.gov/page/veterans-advocacy

If you live in the Carson City area, there is an additional opportunity to help veterans and their families by volunteering for our Veteran Information System (VIS) Scanning Project. This project scans the information from paper discharge documents into our VIS database. This will enable veterans to easily access their earned benefits because they will not have to provide the paperwork when applying for benefits. If you wish to volunteer, you must undergo both federal and State background checks.

Finally, there is one more big event in northern Nevada right around the corner. You will want to mark your calendar for Saturday, June 29th at 3:00 p.m. We are planning a dedication ceremony for a Gold Star Families Memorial on the grounds of the new Northern Nevada State Veterans Home.  Keep watch on our website for more information.

Thank you so very much for your continued support of Nevada’s military community and our veterans and their families. I look forward to seeing you at one of our many upcoming events.

Respectfully,
Kat Miller
