The May 2012 Veteran of the Month, Gil Hernandez, was presented the award in Elko by Executive Director Caleb Cage on behalf of Governor Brian Sandoval on May 21. Hernanedez has been extensively involved in ever facet of insuring services are available for the veteran community in Elko from lobbying the state legislature to leading the effort for the recently opened tele-health clinic in the fall of 2011. “The idea behind the award is recognize those who have served in our country in uniform and continues to serve the veterans community throughout the state of Nevada," said Cage. “You’d be hard pressed to find someone in Nevada, not just in Elko, who works harder for the veteran community."
Hernandez stated he’s been a veterans advocate since he was released from his stay in the hospital at the end of his military service. “It’s not about getting this award, it’s about helping veterans," Hernandez stated in his acceptance. “Alot of people have called me over the years and some I’ve been able to help and some I can’t, but we’re fortunate to have two good NOVS service officers now helping our veterans and we hope it will continue."
