For service spanning three decades, Albert Jackson “Jack” McMindes was honored as Nevada’s Veteran o f the Month for September 2012. “Mr. McMindes exemplifies the spirit of service so many of our veterans share. His contributions over such a long period of time to fellow veterans makes this an honor to present him with this recognition on behalf of Governor Sandoval,” said Kat Miller, Executive Deputy Director for the NOVS, during the presentation in Fallon on Friday, September 14.
Mr. McMindes is considered to be one of the most valuable members of the Department of Nevada’s Veterans of Foreign Wars having served in nearly every major administrative role for the state’s VFW from 1978 through 2012. In addition to serving as an officer, when there were volunteer positions which were unable to be filled, Mr. McMindes was there to fill the void. He has been the point for cost cutting measures, developed a computer based accounting system for the state VFW and acted as a liaison between the state’s congressional delegation and the VFW department and is a life member of North Las Vegas Memorial Post 10047
Mack McMindes served for twenty three years in the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1974 when he retired from his last station at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada. During his time in the military, he served as a medical technician, small arms instructor and finished his career as an operations intelligence specialist attaining the rank of Master Sergeant as a non-commissioned officer for operational intelligence in 1972 and served in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam conflict as an intelligence specialist.
The Veteran of the Month program is managed by the Nevada Office of Veterans Services (NOVS) under the direction of Executive Director Caleb Cage. “Board members of the Veterans Services Commission review nominations and choose a recipient during quarterly meetings for the following three month period,” stated Cage. “Our office is very proud to staff this project on behalf of Governor Sandoval.”
