Michelle Sykes April 2015 Veteran of the Month

Governor Brian Sandoval recognized Michelle Sykes as Nevada’s Veteran of the Month for April 2015. A 29 year Army veteran, Ms. Sykes has continued to serve her community by working with the Mirage Resort in providing transportation for disabled veterans to Wounded Warrior Events over the last three years.

Her service extends to being a mentor for service members joining the military and coordinates transportation as new recruits leave for basic training. Sykes is also very involved in JROTC at local high schools. She served as director for the JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge Camp in 2014 for 150 Las Vegas area high school students.

Sykes community services extends to being a volunteer for cancer research, plans color guard presentation for school programs, Las Vegas City Prayer Breakfast, football games and a host of other community events.

“We are honored and appreciate Michelle’s ongoing volunteerism,” says NDVS Director Kat Miller. “She is an example of the many veterans who continue to serve not only veterans and military needs, but is active in community events as well.”

The Veteran of the Month program is managed by the Nevada Department of Veterans Services under the direction of Director Katherine Miller. Board members of the Veterans Services Commission review nominations and choose a recipient during quarterly meetings for the following three month period.
