NDVS Honors Veteran of the Month, Veteran Supporter of the Month, September 2016

Twenty-year Marine veteran Frank Reynolds and volunteers of the Nevada Veteran’s Coalition were recognized by Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval for their contributions to veterans and families today, Tuesday, Sept. 27, at the Governor’s Mansion, Carson City.
Vietnam and Desert Storm veteran Reynolds, nominated for his individual contributions by his fellow members of Carson City’s Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 388, will receive Veteran of the Month distinction for the community efforts he leads, including Honor Flight for Vietnam Veterans in America, founded in 2014.
As a member of VVA, past Commandant and of the Marine Corps Leagues, and current co-chair of the Carson City Veterans Community Council (CCVCC), Reynolds sees his role as a veteran advocate in line with Gov. Sandoval’s commitment to Nevada’s veterans and the military.
“Nevada is a great state,” Reynolds, an Illinois transplant, said. “These are common-sense people who don’t put issues on the back burner. Nevada is a proactive state with the Adopt-a-Vet Dental program (the only one of its kind in the U.S.) and Honor Flight for Vietnam Vets.”
Friend and nominator Tom Spencer explains that “in 2014, Frank approached Jon Yuspa, Chairman of the Nevada Honor Flight, and explained …several Vietnam Veterans has passed away…without benefit of being on an Honor Flight (reserved for medically-deemed ‘terminal’ vets and WWII vets).”
Funds were gathered for a Vietnam Veterans Honor Flight to the nation’s capital that did not interfere with the WWII Honor Flights. Other states now follow Nevada’s example.

Reynolds helped organize the CCVCC earlier this year, bringing together local service
providers, charity organizations, and veterans organizations to better serve State Capital vets. A hosted page on the city’s website: carson.org/residents/veterans allows vets, military, and family members to easily access vital resources via the internet.
Perhaps the greatest goal of this Marine is the establishment of a Nevada Veterans Museum. It is a natural for the man who was a history major in college — “military science, battles, logistics.” Reynolds is actively pursuing this non-profit effort.
The Nevada’s Veteran’s Coalition (NVC), for their role in honoring fallen veterans, will receive the Veteran Supporter of the Month award.
Based in Fernley, NVC’s main focus of 50 veterans and civilians is to support the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery (NNVMC). (Learn more at: www.supportnnvc.org/)
The NVC Honor Guard provides military-funeral services to any and all veterans interred at NNVMC, including services for Unaccompanied Service for the internment of unclaimed veterans each fourth Thursday of the month, 3 pm.
“The NVC has always stepped up to provide a Military Honors Service for these heroes,” said NVC President Brett Palmer.
Living veterans also are honored by NVC, as evidenced by the selection in late-2015 of Dillon Erickson and his family to live in a remodeled home, rent free, for a full year, following Erickson’s discharged from the U.S. Army.
