Grant Award Supports Opportunities for Veterans, Young People to Work on Southern Nevada’s Public Lands

By Jocelyn Torres, Conservation Lands Foundation
The Conservation Lands Foundation (CLF) is announcing a great opportunity for veterans and eligible young people looking to gain some work experience.

CLF has received a $50,000 grant from NV Energy Foundation to support military veterans and young people who are part of the Nevada Conservation Corps to work at Sloan Canyon National Conservation, Basin and Range National Monument and Gold Butte National Monument.

The corps members will work for two months building and repairing trails, installing new educational signs, conducting habitat restoration and gathering data for management planning.

This is the third year NV Energy Foundation has supported the program, called ‚ÄúFrom Military Service to Green Service,‚Äù and partnered with CLF, Bureau of Land Management, Nevada Conservation Corps and area nonprofits to provide this unique opportunity for veterans and young people to gain work experience in natural resources management.

‚ÄúSloan Canyon, Basin and Range, and Gold Butte are some of Nevada‚Äôs and the nation‚Äôs most spectacular and important public lands,‚Äù said Jocelyn Torres, Nevada Program Director for the Conservation Lands Foundation. ‚ÄúWe are extremely grateful for NV Energy Foundation‚Äôs support and commitment to helping provide veterans with work experience, and support for these beautiful places.‚Äù

Last year, corps members worked at Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area and Basin and Range National Monument, monitoring and maintaining more than 80 miles of trail, hosting two public events with community volunteers, and concealing illegal routes to protect cultural resources. They received chainsaw training and wildland firefighting certifications, along with mentoring from an employment specialist about federal employment opportunities and application processes. Corps members also receive AmeriCorps education awards that may be applied for college classes or to pay student loans. Veterans and young people can learn more about the program and apply for the February 2018 program online by clicking the job of interest to you.
