Veteran of the Month – June 2017

(Las Vegas, NV) – U.S. Navy veteran James Kerr is being honored as this month’s “Veteran of the Month.” He received the award and recognition on Thursday, June 22, 2017 at a ceremony in the Grant Sawyer Building in Las Vegas, Nevada. 
 
Governor Brian Sandoval and the Nevada Department of Veterans Services are pleased to announce Kerr’s selection based on his work helping veterans through the Henderson Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3848, American Legion Post 40, Nellis Air Force Base Chapter of the Non-Commissioned Officer Association, Veterans Transition Resource Center and City of Henderson.  
 
Kerr has served as a Veterans Service Officer (VSO) for several decades. His first assignment as a VSO was in the National Headquarters in Washington D.C. representing veterans across the country. After two promotions, he ended up at the Board of Veterans Appeals representing veterans before Administrative Law Judges. Since 2011, he has served as a VSO at the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Basic Post 3848 helping veterans in the Henderson community. He previously was VFW District 6 Service Officer and was responsible for training and oversight of nine Post Service Officers.  
 
Additionally, Kerr supports and helps military members through his volunteer work through the Nellis Air Force Base Chapter of the Non-Commissioned Officer Association. He serves as the VSO for the Veterans Transition Resource Center in North Las Vegas supporting veterans being discharged and/or returning from overseas deployment. This work involves Active Duty as well as Guard and Reserve members. Kerr also coordinates with the City of Henderson serving as a resource to address the needs of the homeless, widows and dependents of veterans.  
 
Kerr spent four years in the Navy serving in Vietnam. During his time he received three medals: the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal.  
 
The “Veteran of the Month” and “Veteran Supporter of the Month” awards are part of Governor Brian Sandoval’s commitment to make Nevada the “friendliest State in the nation” to its military and veterans communities. The awards are provided through the Nevada Department of Veterans Services.
