Walter Wayne Willson Veteran of the Month October 2012

Governor Brian Sandoval recognized Walter Wayne Willson as Nevada’s Veteran of the Month for October 2012 at a ceremony in the Guinn Room of the State Capital Building today. “I’m always humbled by the ongoing service of veterans like Mr. Willson and I appreciate every opportunity I have to present this award,” said Governor Sandoval. “Mr. Wilson’s dedication to our nation during your military service and his continued sacrifice of time which benefits our veteran community is appreciated not just by me but everyone in our state and it is such an honor for me to recognize him today as our Veteran of the Month.”

Mr. Willson served 43 years in the National Guard graduating from the United States Army Sergeant Major Academy in 1976. He served as a Command Sergeant Major of an Engineer Group and a Combat Engineer Battalion then transferred to the Nevada Army National Guard in 1984 and moved to Carson City in that year. He has been an active member in the veteran community before and after his retirement in 1999.

Mr. Willson’s resume of service now spans 3 decades and includes both military service organizations and community groups. He was one of the original founders of the Veterans Guest House in 1991, founded the Northern Nevada Wheelchair Program in 2008 and is a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). He has served as President of the Lions Club, Master of the Masonic Lodge, served in various commander roles in addition to chairing committees. And when not attending or overseeing a committee meeting, he has also been a volunteer van driver for DAV. “He has been a tireless worker in Nevada’s veteran community for years,” said Executive Director Caleb Cage. “Whether he’s working with the American Legion, DAV or a community group, Mr. Willson is an example of sacrifice for the betterment of others.”
