STATE OF NEVADA, VETERANS CEMETERY TO COMMEMORATE $5 MILLION GRANT AWARD

BOULDER CITY, NV (August 12th, 2016) — The State of Nevada accepted accept a $5 million grant award from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs on August 12th, 2016, at their Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City. The ceremony saw George Eisenbach, Director of the Veterans Cemetery Grants Program, present the award to Governor Brian Sandoval, who spoke eloquently of the importance of the Boulder City cemetery in particular. “This memorial cemetery is particularly impressive as it is the second busiest state veterans’ cemetery in the nation,” said Sandoval, who was particularly careful to thank all of the people that come together to operate a cemeteries in both the north and south of Nevada.
Governor Sandoval stressed how fortunate the State of Nevada was to receive the award. “It didn’t happen by chance,” he said. “It took a lot of hard work from many different people. In August 2012, the NDVS submitted a grant proposal to Raise and Realign the Southern Nevada Veterans memorial cemetery. The grant was rejected three times due to lack of funding over the span of two years. Through dedication and diligence persistence in September 2014, the VA granted NDVS $3.5 million grant and in January 2016 authorized the remaining $1.5 million for the completion of the project.”
The money will be used to realign the headstones of the more than 30,000 interred at the second busiest state cemetery in the nation, as well as contribute to substantial landscaping projects. The veteran memorial cemeteries in Boulder City and Fernley, which are operated and maintained by the Nevada Department of Veterans Services, serve 287,000 Nevada veterans and their families, and are host to over 100,000 visitors every year.
