PVA – Nevada Chapter’s Work In Developing Their Organization

Nevada Paralyzed Veterans of America (NV PVA) has been improving the quality of life of veterans with spinal cord injuries and dysfunction for the past 20 years in Nevada. NV PVA is part of a national organization.

Under the guidance of Daniel Kaminski, Chapter President, and Julie Johnson, Executive Director, for the past 10 years the following programs have been either created or enhanced to ensure our veterans and disabled community alike are able to succeed in life with little to no barriers.

NV PVA has many programs for our veterans. The top four are (a) Step Outside (b) Sports (c) Wellness and (d) Adopt-A-Vet

  1. Step Outside Program – encourages members to not isolate themselves. They can go out for a meal, show, concert, ball game and all they have to do in return is send in the receipt and a written summary of the activity, including if it was accessible and if they recommend it for others.
  1. Sports Program – NV PVA offers a wide range of support for adaptive sports including wheelchair bowling, wheelchair basketball, boccia ball, pistol shooting, Reno Military Sports Camp, Paralympic Kids sports activity nights, as soon as things start to open back up we will be looking for participants for our air gun program and we also send a team to the National Veterans Wheelchair Games. During the pandemic we have links for virtual sports and activities.
  2. Wellness Program – Veterans attend a weekly meeting at the VA with various VA employees each time to address issues they may have in different departments such as prosthetics, pharmacy, etc. This is a place for them to talk with fellow veterans who understand their medical issues. NV PVA also sponsors this group on outings to various places throughout the valley to help them bond and work on their PTSD and isolation issues.
  3. Adopt-A-Vet Program – NV PVA delivers to homes of 130 veterans in the Southern Nevada community every month a bag of food for the week and a bag of hygiene items for the month.

NV PVA also advocates on a national level with Congress and Senate on issues concerning veterans and the disabled community such as the ADA and Air Carrier Act. Our NSO handles all VA claims and benefits for our members.

NV PVA chapter president Dan Kaminski is a founding member of Nevada Paralyzed Veterans of America and he has also held the following positions during the past 20 years: board of director, sports director, secretary, advocacy director, government relations director, and vice president.

Dan and Julie sit on various boards and support organizations such as Nevada Veterans Foundation, Southern Nevada State Veterans Home review panel, Elks Lodge #1468 and more. Dan is also a member of a community philanthropic group that is helping to enhance the lives of those living in our community. For additional information, please contact:
