Last month, students in the leadership class at Mendive Middle School conducted a schoolwide fundraising effort for Veterans Day and donated $600 to the Northern Nevada State Veterans Home (NNSVH).
This effort was a result of Mendive Leadership Instructors Julia Bartsch and Heather Morris encouraging their students to support local veterans during the week of Veterans Day. As part this project, the 31 students of the leadership class asked an estimated 575 fellow Mendive students to donate. They also asked their fellow students to participate in the NDVS “Send a Smile” campaign where they submitted photos and videos with messages of appreciation and thanks for the residents of the Home.
“The Northern Nevada State Veterans Home truly appreciates this donation, especially from young people in our community engaging in service to others,” said NDVS Deputy Director Amy Garland. “The lessons these students are learning now will serve them well in the future and we are happy to play a small role in that process. We can’t thank them enough!”
Mendive Leadership Instructor Bartsch said,“ Our Mendive student body and staff were honored to help support our veterans. As teachers, we love to see our students learn to look outside of themselves and give back to others.”
