988 Launching Soon
On July 16th, 2022 the Veterans Crisis Line number will change to a three digit dialing code, 988.
Veterans will still be able to reach the Veterans Crisis Line with the current phone number—1-800-273-8255 and Press 1— through chat, and by text (838255) but this new number is meant alleviate to make it easier for some one in crisis to call for help.
Signed into law in 2020, the National Suicide Hotline Designation Act authorized 988 as the new three-digit number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline also known as the Veterans Crisis Line (VCL). This is more than just a simple to remember number, it a direct connection to an accessible, compassionate, military-culture trained responder that is ready to help veterans, service members, and families experiencing a mental health related crisis. This includes thoughts of suicide, mental health or substance use crisis, and any other type of emotional distress. 988 is also available for anyone concerned about a loved one who may need crisis support.
