- Nevada Transition Assistance Program (NVTAP)
By: Rachel Jelenic
Happy New Year! The Nevada Department of Veterans Services would like to provide more information on our new social support program, done in partnership with the NEST Collaborative, called Heroes for Heroes.
Heroes for Heroes’ efforts are focused on connecting veterans with other community members to curb the impact of social isolation brought about by COVID-19.
Veterans interested in the program will have the opportunity to befriend a reliable volunteer to open conversations and foster support through difficult situations. These conversations will occur by phone or through video chat to prioritize the health and safety of both volunteers and participants.
“This pandemic is causing us all to better understand the detrimental impacts of loneliness and isolation. The Heroes for Heroes program gives veterans and volunteers a virtual space to form authentic, reciprocal relationships.” says Casey Acklin, Coordinator for the NEST Collaborative. “What better gift can we give our heroes during this difficult time than that of true connection? What better gift can we give volunteers than the chance to know a true hero?”
If you are looking to volunteer, this is a wonderful way to serve those who have served before us. Veterans have dedicated their lives to the safety and security of Americans in many different ways. Listening to their stories and assisting with resource allocation are a couple ways that volunteers will make a difference. If you are a veteran and can attest to the challenges of loneliness due to COVID-19, this program could help revive a sense of connectedness. We hope the bonds you make through the program help emphasize the importance of community. The Nevada Department of Veterans Services is proud to work closely with the NEST Collaborative on such an important initiative. During a time of separation, it is important to do all things possible to unite together safely. If you have any questions about the program, please reach out to Rachel Jelenic, Program Manager at jelenicr@veterans.nv.gov.
