We would like to congratulate William “Danny” McGinley for being named Veteran of the Month (VOM) and the Associated General Contractors (AGC), Nevada Chapter, being named Veteran Supporter of the Month (VSM) for July. Due to the risk of coronavirus exposure, special ceremonies to honor and recognize the VOM and VSM will be postponed until it is safe to resume them once again.
McGinley served in the U.S. Army and following his service, he has been incredibly involved in the veteran community.
McGinley has been a committed and supportive member of the veteran community in northern Nevada. He is an active member of the Sparks Elks Lodge and serves as the Veterans Committee Chairperson. In this capacity and prior to COVID-19, he would host poker games at the VA Hospital in Reno to raise funds. Once a month, he would also arrange for veterans living in the Community Living Center (CLC) to go to the Sparks Elks Lodge for a home–cooked meal. He also previously co-hosted ice cream socials at the Reno VA Hospital.
Once a year, McGinley arranges for a free barbecue at the hospital where they are able to feed the staff, veterans, and volunteers. At Christmas, he provides veterans at the CLC with Christmas cards and small gifts. He is also an active supporter of the Reno Homeless Veteran Stand Down where he uses a $2,500 grant to purchases clothing that can be given at no cost to veterans in need for the winter months.
The Associated General Contractors, Nevada Chapter in coordination with Congressman Amodei, led the effort to renovate Nevada’s only Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery. This cemetery was created in 1890 as a final resting place for Civil War Veterans and has served as the site of American Legion Post 1 and Boy Scout Troop 1 Memorial Day Programs. The Associated General Contractors, Nevada Chapter, donated all labor and materials to improve the entryway to the cemetery and the signs. This improvement cost $40,000 and has resulted in improved accessibility to the cemetery and more recognizable signage.
The Veteran of the Month is awarded to veterans across Nevada who have gone above and beyond the call of duty, specifically with respect to volunteer work in support of veterans and the military. The Veteran Supporter of the Month award recognizes both organizations and non-veteran Nevada community members who support military members stationed in Nevada, Nevada veterans, and their families. Both programs shine a bright light on individuals and organizations that help military members, veterans, and their families with no expectation of recognition or award.
The July Veteran of the Month and Veteran Supporter of the Month ceremony has been postponed. The Nevada Department of Veterans Services will provide information on re–scheduling once this unprecedented health crisis is over.
