Memorial Day 2022

The crowds returned for in-person Memorial Day activities to both the Northern and Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemeteries (SNVMC, NNVMC) this year.

The weekend started off with Flag-In on Saturday, May 28th. Hundreds of volunteers, including nonprofits, service organizations, church groups, families, veterans, supporters and more turned out to both cemeteries to place a flag on each gravesite. SNVMC Superintendent Chris Naylor said a total of 32,388 flags were placed on the gravesites this year. In northern Nevada, Superintendent Gabe Velazquez noted that volunteers had placed 6,200 flags in a little more than an hour.

On Monday, thousands of visitors to both cemeteries turned out for Memorial Day ceremonies at both locations. This year, the Governor made remarks at the southern cemetery in Boulder City. In the north, DAV Commander and VFW State Judge Advocate Jerome Washington was the keynote speaker.

NDVS Director Fred Wagar was also in Pahrump this year to attend the Memorial Day ceremony there. NDVS staff was also in attendance for a Memorial Day ceremony hosted by the VFW in Pahrump.

We captured some of the sights of our Memorial Day events in Fernley and Boulder City as well as the VFW hosted event in Pahrump in the photos below.
