Dear Fellow Veterans and Veteran Supporters,
Before I focus on our upcoming Memorial Day ceremonies at our Northern and Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemeteries, I wanted to thank everyone who turned out to Carson City last month in support of Veterans and Military Day at the Legislature (VAMDAL). VAMDAL was an amazing event with record breaking participation from so many of our northern Nevada partners, too many to list here. I want to personally thank the Nevada National Guard and the United Veterans Legislative Council (UVLC) for being such amazing partners in hosting the event this year. Special thanks to Brig. Gen. Dan Waters and UVLC Chair Andy LePeilbet for their part in making this year’s event so successful. It is nice to know our partnerships are so strong and that we enjoy such widespread support.
Our team is now looking ahead to Memorial Day. This year, Memorial Day falls on Monday, May 26, 2025. That means Flag-In will occur on Saturday, May 24, 2025. Flag-In starts early at the Boulder City cemetery at 7:00 a.m. In Fernley, the flag placement begins at 8:30 a.m. As for the Memorial Day Ceremony itself, in the north it will begin at 11:00 a.m. and in the south, the ceremony will begin at 1:00 p.m. If you can’t make one of the ceremonies, I hope you will take time out on that dedicated day to remember our brothers and sisters who made the ultimate sacrifice on our behalf. We also owe their family and loved ones a debt we can never repay.
Finally, I want to congratulate Kelley Guidry, the first recipient of our Nevada Woman Veteran of the Year Award! Read more about her HERE. I also want to say how proud I am of the special events hosted by our team to honor Vietnam War veterans living at the Southern Nevada State Veterans Home and Ms. Mercede Starr, a 105-year-old Lovelock resident who served in the U.S. Navy in World War II. It is our pleasure and our honor to pay tribute to these veterans for their service and sacrifice.
In closing, I will be kicking off a “Listening Tour,” or a series of discussions designed to hear what you have to say and what’s on your mind! We want to make sure that as we plan ahead, the issues and concerns of the veterans’ community are heard. Look for dates, locations and times in the weeks ahead. I look forward to hearing from you and as always, thank you for your amazing support!
Warmest Regards,
Colonel Mary Devine
