Message from the Director – August 2019

One of our top priorities is to ensure that every generation, each veteran is recognized and honored. We are now stepping up this effort and asking for your help!  If you have a great idea for a ceremony, event, gathering, etc. that honors and recognizes veterans, we want to hear from you!

NDVS is offering up to $2,000 to help you or your organization host a special event highlighting a generation of veterans. For example, what about hosting a USO dance party to honor Nevada’s Korean War veterans? Or how about hosting a Gold Star Family Luminary event, where lights or candles are lit in honor a fallen Nevada warrior? It would be wonderful to see these types of events across Nevada with participation from all communities!

I mentioned hosting a Gold Star Family Luminary event because Nevada has been issued a challenge through the Gold Star Luminary Initiative and we want to rise to the occasion! This initiative is an outreach program of MarineParents.com, Inc., a 501(c)(3) public charity.

Another terrific honor and recognition are the Veteran of the Month and Veteran Supporter of the Month programs. Congratulations are in order to Navy veteran Graham Stafford who was named Veteran of the Month in July and to The United Veterans Legislative Council who received the July Veteran Supporter of the Month

Finally, we’re kicking off an exciting new project aimed at remembering and honoring veterans for generations to come. NDVS is working with Air Force veteran Chuck N. Baker to identify, locate, photograph and describe veterans’ memorials across the Silver State. Some are tucked away and are either hard to find or worse, forgotten and in need of repair.  Go here to read about the project and how you can participate:

Year after year, you have been big supporters of these recognition programs and together, I believe we can really raise the bar. I’m looking forward to hearing your ideas and plans. As always, thank you for your continued support of Nevada’s veterans, military members and their families.

Respectfully,
Kat Miller
