Message from the Director – March 2019

This month we are gearing up for a big and important event in Carson City: Veterans and Military Day at the Legislature on March 20th.

The day is set aside in Nevada statute to take place on the third Wednesday in March. It raises awareness and serves as a tribute to Nevada’s military and veterans’ communities.

The day starts at 8:15 AM with coffee and networking in front of the Veterans Memorial, behind the Capitol Building. At 9:00 AM, the Opening Ceremony will be held at the same location. It will feature the Governor, key lawmakers and distinguished veterans. There will be vendors and the Nevada National Guard will provide static military displays.

Between 11:30 AM and noon, the Assembly and Senate will pass resolutions in honor of Nevada’s veterans. The United Veterans Legislative Council (UVLC) pairs veterans with lawmakers in the Assembly and Senate. We really need more participation in this event!  In order to participate, you must contact Mitch Roach at 702-690-6145 or by email at mitch.roach@aol.com by March 13th. The deadline is necessary because the Sergeant at Arms in both the Assembly and Senate must conduct a background check and create certificates for participating veterans.

At noon, join us for a free lunch that will be served outside, next to the Legislative building, using the National Guard’s mobile kitchen.

Speaking of the Legislature, NDVS, in partnership with the United Veterans Legislative Council is continuing to monitor and track bills of significance to veterans, military members and their families. Please visit our website at www.veterans.nv.gov and click the Nevada Legislative Information button.

Finally, if you haven’t signed up for the free, two-day workshop in Reno to become a Nevada Veterans Advocate, now is your opportunity. This workshop will be held at Harrah’s in downtown Reno on April 6-7th.

We look forward to seeing you at an upcoming event this month!

Respectfully,
Kat Miller
Director
