- Nevada Transition Assistance Program (NVTAP)
(Boulder City, Nevada) The first cadre of certified nursing assistant trainees began class at the new PFC Nick Crombie Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Training Academy (Crombie Academy) on November 1st. Class began following a short dedication ceremony of the Crombie Academy. Last month, the program received approval to begin operations from the Nevada State Board of Nursing.
The Crombie Academy is providing both training and CNA job opportunities at the Southern Nevada State Veterans Home (SNSVH) in Boulder City at no cost to participants. The Academy is named in honor of 19-year-old PFC Nick Crombie from Winnemucca, Nevada. Crombie was killed in 2006 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee during combat operations in Iraq. He was serving as a combat medic, assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, in Baumholder, Germany.
The Crombie Academy is a workforce development program housed within SNSVH. The program offers an introduction to basic nursing skills, nursing assistant duties and responsibilities, as well as an understanding of veteran culture in an acute and long-term care setting at SNSVH.
The 4-week (120) hours of training includes 40 hours of classroom instruction, 40 hours of laboratory practice and 40 hours of supervised clinical instruction delivered on-site at the SNSVH. Each 4-week session (30 hours per week) will have a maximum of 15 students. The training will prepare participants for the CNA State Board of Nursing Examination. Participants who pass the Certification Exam will be provided a front-line opportunity to apply for CNA positions within SNSVH.
Preference for selection will be given to Gold Star Families, veterans, spouses of veterans, families of SNSVH team members, and Boulder City residents. Interested candidates will find eligibility requirements and the application process at veterans.nv.gov and by visiting the Southern Nevada State Veterans Home web page.
