Military OneSource offers short-term, non-medical telephonic, online, video and text counseling options at NO COST to active-duty, Guard, and Reserve members and their families. Non-medical counseling support through the Military OneSource program is intended to expand, not replace, the variety of mental health services provided by the military branches.
The U.S. Department of Defense defines non-medical counseling as: •short-term and solution-focused •non-medical/non-diagnostic
•not appropriate for individuals needing medical mental health treatment
Non-medical counseling is supportive in nature and addresses general conditions of living such as:
•life skills (decision-making, coping, communication, stress management, etc.)
•improving relationships at home and at work
•adjustment issues (such as those related to returning home from a deployment, marital problems, parenting, and grief and loss)
Non-medical counseling is aimed at preventing the development or worsening of conditions that may detract from military and family readiness. The counseling approach used is psycho-educational, and is designed to empower participants to learn to anticipate and resolve challenges associated with the military lifestyle.
Non-medical counseling is NOT appropriate for clinical or psychological issues that require long-term care such as:
•clinical issues identified in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders by the American Psychiatric Association
•medically managed psychiatric issues
•substance abuse
•traumatic brain injury
•child or spousal abuse
•suicidal ideation
•homicidal thought or intent
