Suicide prevention course qualifies additional safeTALK trainers

The NDVS Suicide Prevention Program, in collaboration with Humboldt Juvenile Services and the Nevada Office of Suicide Prevention, hosted a safeTALK T4T (Training for Trainers) course on June 7-8th. The training qualified 10 new safeTALK trainers in Winnemucca and Reno who are working in veteran-serving populations.

The safeTALK course is a three-and-a-half hour training that teaches attendees how to recognize suicide warning signs, called invitations. The training also teaches participants how to ask someone if they are thinking about suicide, and how to connect someone with thoughts of suicide to helping resources. This course is a community-wide protective factor for developing caring, suicide-safer communities for our veterans and families.

Humboldt Juvenile Services is a critical partner in veteran suicide prevention. Kevin Wiggin, Juvenile Probation Officer and USMC Veteran leads our Winnemucca Mayor's Challenge Team, and Pauline Salla, Director of Juvenile Services, is a key member of Humboldt Connections and advocate for suicide prevention community-wide.
