Top Six Myths About Women Veterans

When people think of veterans, they may not think about the countless women who have also made the sacrifice to serve. What may be even more shocking is the number of women who have served, but still do not consider themselves a veteran!

The numbers that emerge from women veterans surveyed on this topic tells this story. In 1992, the percentage of women veterans who considered themselves a veteran was 43 percent. Compare that to today. In 2022, 59 percent of women veterans considered themselves a veteran. While this is an improvement, it shows there is still a lot of work ahead to educate women veterans as they may not be aware of the benefits, programs, and services they have earned through their military service.

Below are the top six reasons (or myths) women veterans shared on why they did not consider themselves a veteran.

  1. Veterans are from the Vietnam era!
  2. Did not serve in combat
  3. Never left CONUS (Continental United States)
  4. “Just" did 2 or 3 years
  5. Was told I am not a veteran
  6. Joined to pay for my education

NDVS is committed to eradicating these myths by providing education and knowledge. If you or your organization would like to support women veterans.
