The nation of Japan surrendered to Allied forces on August 14, 1945, but the official surrender would not happen until September 2.
Representatives from Japan and Allied forces met aboard the U.S.S. Missouri, anchored at the time in Tokyo Bay, to formalize the surrender. Ever since, September 2 has been recognized at V-J Day, or Victoryover Japan Day.
