Veteran GS Tax Exemption Update from the DMV

October 2020 – The Governmental Services Tax Exemption is a popular veterans benefit that was impacted by state office closures in response to COVID-19. This benefit is based on the fiscal year.

If your registration expired between 3/12 and 6/30/2020 and was not renewed on the DMV’s website or self-service kiosk when it was due, veterans will need to present the DMV with a written statement from their county assessor’s office with their prior year’s exemption number and amount for the DMV to apply it.

Late fees may apply if the registration renewal could have been completed on the DMV’s website or self-service kiosk. The veteran may not claim last fiscal year’s exemption and the current fiscal year’s exemption on the same vehicle registration. The DMV is happy to assist Veterans who have been affected by this unforeseen consequence of 2020 COVID-19 closures.
