Week-Long Celebration of Veterans Day

This year, Veterans Day at Nevada’s State Veterans Homes turned a daylong event into a week’s worth of celebration. Twenty-four hours simply wasn’t enough time to host a flurry of activities and events at the Northern Nevada State Veterans Home or the Southern Nevada State Veterans Home.

Veterans Day fell on a Friday. On Monday, the week-long celebration at the southern home in Boulder City started off slowly, with a movie and popcorn in the Town Hall. As the week went by, activities picked up ranging from a Veterans Olympics competition to a car parade outside the facility. The week-long celebration came to a crescendo with a visit by the Raiders Foundation.

Not to be outdone, residents at the Northern Nevada State Veterans Home (NNSVH) also enjoyed special events and activities for Veterans Day Week. Monday started with the first-ever NNSVH Veterans Olympics competition followed by the Sparks Elks sponsoring Monday Night Football featuring special raffle prizes.

The week of celebration continued with activities featuring visitors ranging from students with Hillside Elementary who put on a patriotic program to twelve active duty Navy sailors from the Fallon Naval Air Station who made the rounds. Other activities included a volunteer recognition ceremony, giveaways from the Katie Grace Foundation, along with a wheelchair decorating contest sponsored by the Drakulich Foundation and Makers Paradise Art. The residents also celebrated the Marine Corps’ birthday on November 10th, thanks to the Marine Corps League. We would also like to give a big shout out to the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association and Delta Kappa Gamma Society International for their participation and support.

So you don’t feel like you missed out on the fun, we are sharing some photos below.  They’re from the NNSVH and yes, that is a lobster tail on that plate!
