Governor Brian Sandoval, Nevada Department of Veterans Services Honors Veteran of the Month for November

By Blake Boles
LAS VEGAS, NV (November 16th, 2016) — In the spirit of his continuing mission to make Nevada “the most military and veteran friendly state in the nation,” Governor Brian Sandoval and the Nevada Department of Veterans Services honored a veteran in Las Vegas on Wednesday, November 16th. The ceremony is held every month to celebrate the accomplishments of Nevada’s heroes that have faithfully served their country, and have gone on to greatly benefit their communities. Honored as the Veteran of the Month was US Army veteran and American Legion National Executive Committee Member Ronald Michalski of Henderson.

Michalski enlisted in the United States Army in 1960 as an aircraft mechanic. He has been an active member of several veteran service organizations, including the American Legion and Catholic War Veterans and has volunteered extensively with the VA, National Guard, and the Nevada Department of Veterans Services. With the American Legion, he has been a prominent member for over 16 years. He is currently serving on their National Executive Committee, as well as the Department Finance Committee. He is also the former Commander of Post 40 in Henderson, serving from 2003-2004, and again from 2009-2010. He is also the Department of Nevada American Legion Baseball Chairman, a post he took in 2004. He has also served as Nevada’s Boys State Committee Vice Chairman since 2014. With the VA, Michalski has been a member of the Volunteer Service Program at the Southern Nevada Healthcare System since 2012, and is the Lead Volunteer at the Southeast Clinic in Henderson.

Also in 2012, he established and runs the canteen at the Nevada State Veterans Home in Boulder City, while also serving on its Review Panel, and as a member of its Nevada Assistance League. He has helped craft legislation for active duty military, National Guard, and veterans, while also supporting National Guard units with volunteer service in both Henderson and Las Vegas. When he was featured in the July issue of the American legion Magazine, he talked about how important it was to care for veterans. “It makes them feel that they are wanted here, they have a life here and are not forgotten. To me, that’s the big thing: they are not forgotten.”
