Sending a Little Love from Home

Lisa Callan, President Blue Star Mothers Spanish Springs NV5 is expressing gratitude after members recently packed and sent 260 “care packages” to deployed U.S. service men and women.

In an email thanking NDVS for providing Blue Star members with the space for members to gather and pack the care packages she wrote, “Sending a care package is sending a little love from home. It is their (Blue Star members) honor to send care packages, as not everyone has someone at home to help with this task or can afford to send a care package.”

She added, “This chapter could not have achieved this mission without the support of many businesses, organizations, and individuals,” who provided items to pack and send to service members.

The Blue Star Mothers of America was established in 1942 and was officially chartered by Congress in 1960. The organization is made up of mothers, stepmothers, grandmothers, foster mothers and female legal guardians who have children serving in the military, guard, or reserves or have children who are veterans. The purpose of the Blue Star Mothers of America is to support these mothers and their families.

The Blue Star Mother’s original goals were to bring their family’s service member home, to ensure their service member received the benefits they earned and help service members’ families. They were also there to lean on each other and be there in support, if needed and should something happen. Over the years, the goals have broadened to include rehabilitation, hospital work and more.

The Blue Star Mothers see all active-duty service members and veterans as an extension of family. In ending her thank you email, Lisa summed it up best, “To all those who are deployed, come home safe! We miss you. Thank you for your service!”
