Judge Mark Stevens Named Veteran of the Month and The UNLV Student Veterans Association Chapter Named Veteran Supporter of the Month – March 2022
We congratulate Judge Mark Stevens for being named Veteran of the Month (VOM) and the UNLV Student Veterans Association for being recognized as Veteran Supporter of the Month (VSM) for March 2022.
Judge Mark Stevens is a Marine Corps veteran. Following his retirement from the military, he worked with law enforcement as a staff attorney and re-entered public service as a prosecutor for the City of Henderson. After his election to serve as a Henderson Municipal Court Judge in 2011, he went on to start the Veterans Treatment Court for the City of Henderson where he has worked with hundreds of veterans to reclaim their dignity and overcome adversity for poor decisions made. He is also an active member of several veteran organizations where recently his commitment was on display when he helped a newly relocated Marine Corps veteran attend the Marine Corps Ball and connect with other veterans to be welcomed into the community. As a public figure he also speaks on behalf of veterans to encourage the community to support and employ veterans. His support for veterans has been life changing for many veterans in southern Nevada.
The UNLV Student Veterans Association Rebel Vets is an organization that brings together student veterans to create a sense of community at the university. The association has done this by hosting virtual graduation receptions during the pandemic, hosting hikes to connect with isolated veterans, and providing volunteer opportunities for students by working with organizations such as Justice Impacted Students, Hope for Prisoners. The association has also coordinated with local nonprofits to host “bowling with the blue” events as well as assist in food pantry support operations. Students from the organization have also worked with active-duty, guard, and reserve members to provide presentations to explain how VA education benefits work. Rebel Vets are an invaluable pillar within the veterans’ community of southern Nevada.
