Help Inspire the Next Generation

Often when we think of volunteers supporting veterans we rarely think of young people. When we think of volunteers who go out of their way to support Nevada’s veterans, we often think of people who are older and have reached a point in their lives where they can be active in their communities. Here at NDVS we’re looking to break that mold. We believe you could hold the key to inspiring the next generation to get involved and enhance the life a Nevada veteran!

NDVS is now accepting nominations for the Serving Veterans Youth Award. This recognition rewards an individual (or group of young Nevadans) for volunteering their time, energy and efforts in support of veterans and the veterans’ community. In addition to the amazing recognition and honor, the publicity surrounding this award also educates others about the volunteer opportunities available and serves as inspiration for other young people to get involved too.

This was the case for Ms. Dana Surwill who is to be the first recipient of the Veterans Youth Award. She is currently a senior at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She began volunteering before high school, through her involvement in leadership building activities as a member of the National Honor Society. She is a Cadet Lieutenant Colonel; the second highest-ranking grade one can attain as a cadet in the Civil Air Patrol.

Since 2016, Ms. Surwill has accumulated 2500 total documented service hours with a 1,000 of those hours involving veterans specifically. In November 2021 alone, she participated in the Las Vegas Veteran’s Day Parade, Fisher House fundraiser, and Honor Flights.

Ms. Surwill has volunteered at events at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City including unaccompanied veteran burials, Wreaths Across America, and flag retirement ceremonies. She also participates with Southern Nevada Honor Flights by writing cards and welcoming home veterans.

As Nevada State Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R) President, her project is to support the Fisher House of greater Las Vegas, which helps veterans’ families in their time of need. So far, she has raised close to $1,400 for the Fisher House since August of 2021.

If you know of a young person (age 19 or younger) who may be worthy of this honor, you are encouraged to go HERE and nominate them today!
